In the beginning...

Dr. Hugo Wall was one of a group of pioneering educators in the central United States who championed professionalism in public administration. Colleges and universities, he felt, should and could educate young people to become better citizens, train people to be qualified public servants, and have a direct impact on the quality of life in communities by working closely with local governments.

He envisioned a “center” that would provide services directly to state and local governments. In 1951, Dr. Hugo Wall wrote his former student Clark Ahlberg, "[President] Corbin and I...still are convinced that this institution ought to have an honest-to-God School of Public Administration and one of these days we may get the job done."

Thankfully, for all of us and the communities our graduates have served, Dr. Wall persevered. We look forward to celebrating his achievement and set the course for the next 50 years.
